There are often some gems to be unearthed from coach Jim Harbaugh's press conferences. One occurred last week when a reporter asked him about potential off-field rules for his players for Super Bowl week.
When Harbaugh said, "Yeah, we'll have a schedule. We'll have rules. "
When asked whether he would share those rules with the media, Harbaugh said, "No. I don't think they apply to you. Do you want a curfew? Are you going to have a curfew? "
When a reporter responded, "I need rules, " Harbaugh said, "Yeah, I think that's a good idea. Protect the outside world from the media and protect the media from the media, yeah. We could come up with a few. "
--49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick often makes sure to credit the team's offensive line when asked about the success he had this season after taking over for Alex Smith. For good reason.
It often seems that offensive lines are only talked about when they struggle. Often when lines struggle it's because there are a lot of moving parts. For the 49ers, that hasn't been the case. The line has been a pillar of stability.
Alex Boone won the job at right guard this season and was one of two players on the line -- right tackle Anthony Davis was the other -- that didn't miss any of the team's 1, 005 offensive snaps.
The other three starters played every game and missed a total of 72 snaps. Left tackle Joe Staley missed 47 while center Jonathan Goodwin and left guard Mike Iupati each missed just 25.
Taken in total, the five starting linemen played a total of 4, 928 of a possible 5, 025 snaps (98. 1 percent).
--Kaepernick received some criticism earlier this season because of his tattoo-laced arms, but he doesn't let that bother him.
When he goes into his "Kaepernicking" pose he touches the tattoos on his right arm, one that says "faith" on his right biceps and "to God the glory" on his right arm.
Asked about his faith, Keapernick said, "No. 1 is kind of my way of saying, I don't really care what people think about my tattoos. I got them for me and to show people this is what I believe in. God has brought me this far, he's laid out a phenomenal path for me and I can't do anything but thank him. "
As for which tattoo is his favorite, Kaepernick said, "Probably the one on the inside of my arms, it says 'my gift is my curse. ' I just feel like that's something that applies to my life in many different ways. "
Asked to explain, he said, "Being an NFL quarterback, there's a lot of advantages that come with it. There are a lot of doors that open when you're a quarterback, but at the same time you're under a lot of scrutiny. There are a lot of things you can't do as well. "
--Give 49ers backup quarterback Alex Smith credit for the way he has handled being demoted behind Kaepernick.
During the bye week, he was asked what it was like watching the team advance to the Super Bowl.
Smith acknowledged, "For one, I'd be lying if i said it wasn't a little bittersweet. Yeah, I want to be out there. That's what you work for. Coming into the season, that's what I was thinking about. That was the mindset. That was the goal for me. "
Smith also said, "That's how i got my start in college, it was no different. Guy in front of me got hurt and that's how I got my first start. So it'd be pretty hypocritical to be upset about it. It's just the nature of team sports. "
And, Smith admits marveling at the way Kaepernick has played.
"I think the thing I've been impressed with most is, not so much the play-making. I knew that and the guys around here knew that, " Smith said. "I think it's the lack of young mistakes that's really jumped out at me.
"Most young guys who come in, yeah, they show flashes and they can play good at times. But they also seem to have those young moments as well, rookie moments, and bone-headed things. He hasn't done it. Period. He's played good ball. He's played patient and smart, playing good football. "
For his part, Kaepernick was asked how important it was that Smith had dealt with the situation the way he did. He said, "It means a lot. I think it really shows his character and the kind of man he is. He's helped me through everything, from Week 1 till now. "
--The 49ers arrived in New Orleans Sunday night to begin their final week of preparation for Sunday's Super Bowl.
Kaepernick handled his first Super Bowl press conference with ease, seemingly unmoved by questions about the pressure of the situation.
"Pressure I think comes from lack of preparation, " Kaepernick said. "This isn't going to be a pressure situation, it is a matter of going out and performing physically. "
But Kaepernick did note one obvious change this week after the 1, 880-mile flight from San Jose to New Orleans.
"We had a bigger plane, " he said.
-- 49ers wide receiver Randy Moss plans to play at least one more season, ProFootballTalk.com reported Sunday.
Moss, 35, did not play at all in 2011, but signed with the 49ers prior to this season and played 16 games, including two starts, during the 2012 regular season, when he caught 28 passes. He also caught five passes in the 49ers' two postseason victories.
Moss will become a free agent in March if he does not sign an extension with the 49ers.
